Collections of Binh Hsu & Ian Smith Day 1

Walnut Tree Auction House would like to start off the year with a two-day auction which encompasses over 500 pieces from both local collectors and previous buyers. Binh Hsu has deep roots in Asian culture that was a result of the hardships his family faced. As an ethnic Chinese, he was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1946 due to his family fleeing Guangzhou during Japan’s assault in World War 2. Sadly, war followed them as the Vietnam War erupted in 1955. To flee the war again, his family sought refuge in America in 1959, when Binh was just 13 years old and moved to California. Binh eventually grew up to own a successful restaurant business that combined his influences of both Chinese and Vietnamese Cuisine. Through his restaurants, he met many long-time customers that introduced him to the beauty of Chinese art pieces which struck deep to his Asian heritage. Now that Binh has successfully retired, he wants to pass on his cherished art pieces to those who share the same passion as him. Ian Smith (1935 – 2019), a Caucasian man, was born in Austin Texas in 1935. When he turned 18 years old, he joined the US Airforce. Eventually in 1957, he was stationed in Taiwan’s Ching Chuan Kang Air Base. During his station, he met Ms. Chiu who later became Ian’s wife. After Ian’s service in the Airforce concluded, the two moved to Ian’s home town, Austin, where Ian became an aviation technician before retiring and moving to Palm Springs, California. Through the influences of Ian’s wife’s traditional Chinese background and his hobby of visiting local flea markets, Ian developed an interest in Chinese art pieces. Many years later, Ian has collected many unique and fascinating pieces that both he and his wife treasure. After Ian’s passing in 2019, his wife, Ms. Chiu, wanted to share part of Ian’s journey by offering some of his collection to others, in hopes to inspire the same interests he had.
