Modern+Contemporary Art & Design

NOAG's Modern+Contemporary Art & Design Auction features a curated selection of 20th/21st century paintings, prints, sculpture, crafts, furniture and lighting. The sale features a range of items from the Estate of Carol Austin Straus, including The Straus Suite by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. The Straus Suite, a group of custom furniture, was commissioned by Carol Austin and Robert D. Straus for their Houston residence in the 1940s to complement their impressive art collection. The Strauses were among the founding members of the Contemporary Arts Association (CAA) in Houston, which later became the Contemporary Arts Museum, and are credited with encouraging Dominique and John de Menil to become founding members of the CAA. Both the Strauses and de Menils were also instrumental in the development of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The Straus Collection includes works by David Bates, Henri Matisse, Derek Boshier, David Hockney, Morris Graves and more. Also featured in the sale is Part II of The Winston Collection of Newcomb Pottery and The Neilson Collection of Modern Furniture.
