American Indian and Western Art
The March 2010 American Indian and Western Art auction will feature an array of art, spanning from the mid-19th century to today. Highlights of the auction include a mid-19th century Iowa catlinite double pipe bowl with lead inlay bear paws and human hands on each bowl, a Hopi Puchtihu Katsina and Qoia, Old Time Navajo Katsina, a Tlingit carved and painted wooden bowl detailed with operculum, and an Alaskan collection of photographs and dolls from missionaries Robert (1865-1958) and Carrie Samms (1878-1951). For those looking for something more modern and sleek, we will be offering a selection of pottery from the Martinez family, including a vase purchased at the Chicago World's fair, a pair of large blackware jars with bear paws purchased in 1924 and attributed to Margaret Tafoya, and a beautiful Santa Clara redware jar by Richard Ebelacker carved with a slithering Avanyu.
