Fine Americana, Paintings and Silver Auction
Wickford, RI –On June 4, 2005 Daniel Buck Auctions will conduct an auction featuring 339 lots of fine Americana including furniture from the 18th and 19th Centuries, more than thirty collectible Firearms, a wide variety of American and European Paintings including Old Master paintings, a large collection of leather bound and other books, more than twenty lots of early Flow Blue wares, as always, a number of lots of fine Silver and a small collection of Chinese propaganda material. The auction will take place at the Radisson Hotel on Post Road, Rt.1 in Warwick.
Some of the highlights of this auction are American furniture of the 18th and 19th Centuries including an A.H. Andrews 18” Terrestrial Globe on the original cherry stand, a rare early 18th C. Six Board Lift Top Blanket Chest in what appears to be original deep red paint, a wonderful late 19th C. Brass Grand Sonnerie and Petite Sonnerie Repeating Carriage Clock with Calendar and Alarm, two nice grain painted blanket chests, cherry and mahogany tilt-top tables, a number of candlestands and work stands, Tavern table, a number of Shaker Community and production chairs and rocking chairs in sizes #1-#7 and other Shaker smalls, a pair of Double Lemon Top Andirons with matching tools, an exquisite early 20th century 4-drawer lift top Silver chest with floral and gilt decoration, an early 19th century 4-drawer chest with red wash and inlaid drawers, and much more. Collectible Americana items include a historic Thomas Jefferson as President and James Madison as Secretary of State signed land document granting “Land appropriated for the Refugees from the British Provinces of Canada and Nova Scotia", silver prints by Alfred Cheney Johnston and a two 19th C. sextants, with one having a direct connection to Providence, RI.
There will be a number of high quality paintings available in the auction such as Old Master works of art including 17th C. Flemish School, after Andrea Del Sarto and Follower of Sir Peter Paul Rubens. Also available will be paintings by the well-known artists, Guy Pene Dubois, Franklin Dullin Briscoe, Maurice Sendak, Morin, as well as New England artists J.J. Enwright, James King Bonnar, Francis West, Francis Orville Libby and Alfred James Tulk and two large Chinese propaganda paintings. There are also three Inuit stone sculptures by the artists Abraham Apakark Anghik and Mannumi Shaqu, a wonderful 19th C. engraving after John Trumbull titled “The Battle at Bunker’s Hill-Near Boston” and a number of Japanese woodblock prints.
Just some of the fine sterling silver in this auction are four flatware sets, including a 104-piece Tiffany & Co. set in the “Hampton” pattern, two sets by Reed & Barton including a 140-piece set in the “French Renaissance” pattern and 102-piece set in the “Francis I” pattern and a Gorham 84-piece set in the “King Edward” pattern. Other silver to include a large Gorham shell form dish and other Gorham decorative dishes, plus much more.
There also will be books from two private collections with most being leather bound. Just a few include J.G. Wilkinson, "Manners And Customs Of The Ancient Egyptians”, "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung", first edition, first printing and John Milton, "The Poetical Works of John Milton in Three Volumes".
The Firearms in the sale include a Remington Model 11-48 28-gauge shotgun that once belonged to Audie Murphy and John Huston, an E. Anschutz target rifle, a Remington New Model Army Revolver, a U.S. Model 1816 Infantry Musket along with a U.S. Model 1863 Rifle, Model 1892 and Model 1894 Winchester rifles, a virtually unused 1950’s Colt Detective Special Revolver and a Belgian double barrel shotgun with an elaborately carved stock along with other collectible rifles and pistols.
