Russian Posters of the Soviet Period
Up for bidding come 148 lots of Russian posters and poster artwork, predominantly from the pre-1945 period. The 1920s are exceptionally well represented, followed by a strong group of posters from the 1930s and another interesting offering of war-time posters. The sale concludes with a small selection of better post-WWII posters, and a section of Space posters. Auction highlights include the iconic "Help!" by D.Moor; an important 1918 poster portfolio (Mayakovsky claimed that "from this portfolio ...came the ROSTA Windows"); a portfolio of Kochergin's Isotype diagrams from the period of Soviet experiments with Neurath theories; and much more. Along with posters by Klutsis, Rodchenko, Lavinsky, Moor, Deni, Kukryniksy, Koretsky, viewers will find a number of wonderful works by artists whose names are less familiar to Western collectors. Numerous posters are of considerable historical value, like the 1922 posters of the ARA competition in Moscow, or a poster of the left-leaning interim regime in Irkutsk produced during the short period when the city was not controlled either by Whites, or by Reds.
