International Art
Waddington's May 16th International Art auction includes over 340 lots featuring important American, British and European paintings, sculpture and drawings.
This sale includes many highlights such as Marshall A. Crowe's collection of Russian Avant-garde paintings and drawings originally collected by George Costakis, Moscow. Featuring the rare gouache, Proun 4 A by El Lissitzky; a large canvas by Dimitri Krasnopevtsev, three works by Ivan Kliun, and several watercolours by Anatoli Zverev.
The British session includes English, Irish and Scottish works. Highlighted by William Powell Frith's most important and widely documented history painting, Sancho and Don Quixote, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1850 and until now has been referred to as "location unknown."
We are pleased to offer a selection of Kenyon Cox oil paintings in the American segment of the sale. Formerly held in the family of the artist for over 100 years, the works have been noted in Cox's correspondences and are referred to in Dr. H.W. Morgan's, The Letters of Kenyon Cox, An American Artist Abroad.
A variety of marine scenes are on offer headed by two Montague Dawson canvases and an early moonlight panel by Dutch artist, Aert van der Neer (1603-1677).
The sale is an interesting array of significant works from many countries and time periods from the 16th to the 20th Century.
