This is in excellent condition. Henri Matisse was born 1869. He trained as a lawyer, but decided to become a painter. In 1891 he studied at Academie Julian in Paris, and learned from William Bouguereau and Moreau. Initially Matisse focused on painting landscapes and still-lifes in a traditional style. After meeting John Russell an artist his style changed. Matisse produced work influenced by the impressionist movement and Cezanne. Matisses style evolved and he began to use strong colors and lose some of the realistic qualities of impressionism. Picasso and Matisse were good friends. Matisse began to create large scale cut paper collages which he called painting with scissors. Matisse died of heart failure in 1954 at 84.
