Dimensions: 4.5 x 7" (16.5 x 10.5 cm) (8), 1076, (90) pages Pigskin blind-tooled over wood panel binding. complete brass fasteners Excellent state Title of manuscript on the front and spine The back cover features the Mercy Seat with God the Father holding Christ in his arms above the Holy Spirit, while the center panel of the front cover depicts Jesus being baptized in the Jordan. Origin: from Ferdinand Hoffmann von Grünbühel and Strechau's (1540–1607) library, bearing his autograph and the Memento Mori phrase "Zeittlichs Zergankhlich" along with the year 1581. Hoffmann was a native of Styria and served as president of Emperor Rudolf II's court chambers, where he was granted estates in Moravia. The book collection was thereafter continued to grow by Hoffmann's successors. The collection was acquired by Prince Ferdinand von Dietrichstein in 1664, and as a result, it was included in the renowned Dietrichstein-Nikolsburg Library, some of which were sold at auction in the early 1930s. Known by his common name, Saint Augustine, Augustine of Hippo (Latin: Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis; 354–430) was a Berber theologian and philosopher who served as the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa. He is recognized as one of the most significant Church Fathers of the Latin Church during the Patristic Era because of the impact his writings had on the growth of Western philosophy and Christianity. Confessions, On Christian Doctrine, and The City of God are only a few of his numerous notable writings.
