Description
TWO REPUBLIC OF TEXAS MANUSCRIPTS, DR. RICHARD R. PEEBLES, EMERGENCY AND ESTATE CORRESPONDENCE, JUNE 15, 1837 AND SEPTEMBER 20, 1839, comprising two manuscripts on wove paper; the first an emergency correspondence from Capt. Adam Clendenin, 1st Infantry, Company A, June 15, 1837, written from Guadalupe (attributed) Post Office, asking for medical attention for a man with legs broken from wagon wheels, to Dr. Peebles in Washington, 8 1/4" x 7 3/8"; and a court settlement concerning the estate of David Bailey, February 25, 1839 - September 20, 1839, contents concerning compensation to Dr. Peebles for journey to Lake Creek to give medicine and prescriptions at different times, heard by Jeremiah M. Wood, Justice of the Peace of Washington County, with blind embossed stamp of ship upper left, [Recto:] paid, 9 1/2" x 7 7/8". Note: Facsimile Transcription #1: "Guadalupe Post Office. June 15/37. Doctr. Peebles, Hurie Please on receipt of this. Come on immediately to this place as one of my men has both of his legs broken by falling under the wagon wheel. Your earliest attention is patiently requested. Yours Respectfully, Capt. Adam Clendenin 1st Infty. Company A. P.S. the Adj. Gen. will attend to the payment of your services. [Recto:] To: Doctr. Peebles, Washington, Texas." The gruesome scene befallen the wounded man is exacerbated by the prospect that the physician would not hear of the emergency until after an approximately 10 hour horseback postal journey after the incident. It would then take?the doctor another 10 hours to reach the wounded. A whole day would have passed before the broken legs would have been seen to. The gritty nature of life in the Early Republic of Texas revealed in this medical correspondence.Facsimile Transcription #2, "Estate of?David Bailey, Decd. Dr. Peebles & Heard. 1839 Febry. 25th. To Journey over to Lake Creek. Medicines. Prescriptions et. cet., at different times. $100. Republic of Texas. County of Washington. Personally appeared before me Jos. H. Wood. Justice of the Peace for the county aforesaid, R.R. Peebles of the firm of Peebles & Heard. Who being duly sworn dept. oath + faith" that the above was against the estate of David Bailey, deceased. is just and true to the best of his knowledge + Belief. Sworn to +?Subscribed to R.R. Peebles this 20th Sept. 1839. J.H.Wood." [Recto:] Paid."? Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Shutts, Houston, Texas.
