Description
ALENA VYKULILOVA. From the Cabbage Cycle, c. 1970s. 14.5x10.1" gelatin silver print. Printed c. 1970s. Inscribed in Czech in pencil on print verso; artist's address stamp in blue ink, crossed out with pencil.
Alena Vykulilova was born on August 20, 1953 in Jihlava. She worked as a laboratory assistant at a research institute (pharmacology). As a photographer, she focuses on social documentary images, and is best known for her work in hospitals. Her films have been shown at the National Photography Shows in Olomouc, in the under-25 category; and later, when she became one of six members of perhaps the only female group in the world called FEMINA. She has exhibited her ensembles several times with FEMINA, for example in 1980 at the Fotochemy hall in Prague and in Hradec Kralove. Photographer and journalist Vaclav Jiru, who has staged photography shows at the Old Town Hall under the title Women with a Camera, has frequently shown Vykulilova as well.
In 1982, along with Dana Kyndrova, she was selected by the Ministry of Culture for a one-week course at a training center for young European creators in the German city of Burghausen.
Currently, her digital camera has once again led her to reportage (in addition to social documentary, she has photographed nudes, landscapes and tried various photographic techniques), but she is also interested in historical photographic techniques. In 2011 she attended courses with professor M. Vojtechovsky. In 2012, she completed the Pinhole Camera course.
