Description
A Fine Tongan Island Club, French Polynesia, 18th/19th century. The cylindrical shaft and ovate blade with overall intricate geometric chip carving. Sometimes called "hoe" after the Tahitian word for paddle, their function was purely ceremonial. Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, Important Tribal Art, November 18, 1997, Lot 319. ex Collection of Roman Black, England. cf. Edge Partington, An Album of the Weapons, Tools and Ornaments, Articles of Dress, Etc. of The Natives of the Pacific Islands, 1969: 81 for a related example of a Tongan Island Club.
