Description
This diving helmet is one of the best-looking we have ever handled at auction! Selling at no reserve is a Joe Savoie mixed gas model diving helmet. The helmet is an early fiberglass example. Savoie’s initial helmets were made with a fiberglass shell, and later he switched to stainless steel. This helmet is serial number 37. Unlike the more commonly found standard air-supplied Savoie helmets, the mixed gas models have a metal strip going down the upper center and additional connections for the mixed gas in the back.
This helmet was primarily used in the Gulf of Mexico for work on oilwell platforms. The original owner kept the helmet in pristine condition and even had his photo taken with it on underwater. His name and the picture will be provided to the winning bidder.
The original owner of this helmet decided to have the fiberglass body gel-coated. A process that modern helmets like Kirby Morgan’s have applied to the fiberglass surface. Before the gel coating, the diver had the skull and crossbones on one side of the helmet applied. The artwork was done professionally before the clear gel coat was applied. The result is a one-of-a-kind Joe Savoie mixed gas helmet that looks just as intimidating as it does impressive!
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS. Worldwide shipping available. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
