American, oil on canvas, 20th century. Signed "Stone" on the lower left. an exciting painting depicting a man on horseback, riding his horse through the snow while holding a rifle. The man wears a wool blanket over his shoulders, and looks ahead with his serious visage which is framed by his centrally parted brown hair. The hairstyle and wool blanket suggest that the rider may be Native American. In addition, the natural setting is particularly striking, as forest behind the rider, with its dense grove of trees, contrasts beautifully with the glistening white snow. All is delineated in a soothing palette of white, cerulean, aqua, forest green, slate grey, chocolate, sienna, and cream with expressive, loose brushwork and a marvelous command of light and shadow. The painting is signed "Stone" on the lower right. Slight impressions of stretchers and crease marks are visible. Minor scuffs and nicks to the frame. Otherwise frame is very good and has hook on verso to display.
