Description
This lot consists of an unframed graphite and watercolor illustration on paper, done in the sensual, Art Nouveau style of Egon Schiele (Austrian, 1890-1918). "Egon Schiele 1916" is inscribed at bottom left corner of composition. Image depicts a female figure contorted in an intimate and expressive moment. Bold lines and strong color give this piece a distinct warmth. Unframed measurements approximately 9.75" x 13".
Egon Schiele (Austrian, 1890-1918) was a leader in the Expressionist art movement and a protege of Gustav Klimt. Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. First rooted in art nouveau, he developed his art to combine ornamental structuring with a fractured line and an expressive use of color. His work is noted for its sensuality, as well as the many self-portraits produced by the artist. All of Schiele's art is infused with a deeply personal element. The many nudes in Schiele's oeuvre, female as well as male, are devoid of any then-acceptable concept of beauty and are like psychograms emphasizing the tensions and tragedies of the human experience.
