This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on canvas, done in the Lyrical Abstraction style of Zao Wou-Ki (Chinese-French, 1920-2013). This vibrant, surreal image depicts a lush wood that shimmers with light and life. Impossibly vibrant colors flush the scene with an abstract quality. A hand-painted inscription can be noted at lower right corner of composition. Unframed measurements approximately 23.5" x 15.5".

Reverse side of canvas features an affixed paper label which reads, in part, "Galerie de France [..] ZAO WOU-KI."

Zao Wou-Ki (Chinese-French, 1920-2013) was a painter and a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Wou-Ki was born in Beijing and graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. In 1948, Wou-Ki and his wife, the composer Lan-Ian, emigrated to Paris to live and work in the artsy Montparnasse neighborhood. Wou-Ki's work was immediately noticed (and admired) by his contemporaries, including Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso. Zao Wou-Ki's artwork is characterized by masses of color that seem to organically materialize and create a world all their own.
