Item Details
Description
Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi, Reed Clan, 1921-2003), ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fascinating kachina doll made from wood, fabric, shell, and turquoise, and painted with the characteristic stripes to represent a koshare (payakyamu) clown. This figure may be a Hopi dancer dressed as the koshare. He holds slices of watermelon in his hands and stands on delineated feet. The stripes are dry-brushed directly on the body to create a streaky appearance, and black circles and lines are painted around the eyes and mouth. Around his waist is a felt loin cloth with red and green yarn strands attached. A necklace of nacre, cowrie shells, and glass beads is strung around his neck. The dramatic headdress has two horns that are upright and decorated with corn husks at the tips. The big belly and watermelon represent gluttony. The foot is signed by the artist: "W HOWATO." This is a large, and very striking example with a jolly countenance. Size: 22" W x 29.75" H (55.9 cm x 75.6 cm); 30" H (76.2 cm) on included custom stand.

This kachina is a sacred jester or trickster spirit, and dancers dressed as koshare will often parody and mock the audience to both invoke laughter and ridicule; they may also throw the watermelon at watchers! While humorous, the performances are meant as serious social commentaries.
