Description
The ivory field with a central oval medallion enclosing a pastel floral bouquet, supported by pairs of conjoined acanthus scrolls end in floral medallions linked by leaf adorned blossoming garlands, beaded frame, within a complementary flowering vine and acanthus scroll border, plain blue narrow outer surround.
The reverse knotting detail indicates this to be of the origin as stated. The workshop for the weaving of furnishing fabrics was established by Pierre Dupont in the Louvre Palace in 1604, and in 1627 its production , with the royal permission of Louis XIII, expanded to rugs and carpets. The French workshops produced magnificent carpets in the first distinctly European style, with extravagant, naturalistic floral patterns. This Savonnerie carpet displays the characteristic style of design associated with Savonnerie craftsmanship. The colours are particularly relevant as to ascertaining age. From the last quarter 19th century the palette moved from deep, rich colours to a more pastel range of colours. This carpet displays these tones, with shades of rose red, ivory, green and ochre, and blue accents. At this time, the weave became tighter and more compact, and the wool quality soft and lustrous. This is a good example of type and origin.
Length 144 inch; Depth 180 inch
Date- late 19th C
