Description
This is a very fine Bronze Kuduo container from the Ashanti peoples of Ghana, Africa. Cast bronze with a detailed scene on the lid of a man protecting his livestock from a lion attack. Ornate, cast brass vessels known as kuduo were the possessions of wealthy individuals among the peoples of the Akan kingdoms. Gold dust and gold nuggets were kept in kuduo, as were other items of personal value and significance. As receptacles for their owners' kra, or life force, they were prominent features of ceremonies designed to honor and protect that individual. This example with lid has a weathered surface suggest. The vessel with lid measures 8 x 4 inches.
