Description
2nd century AD. A mould-made terracotta lamp with ring handle, the filling-hole on the lower left, small V-shaped channel connecting it to discus, slit air hole in channel, the discus iconography comprising a garlanded crown with a man fighting a bull to the centre. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, no.303, for the type. 108 grams, 10.1cm (4"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously in a German collection collection formed since 1970. This form is close to the standard form of Bussière D II 1, but presenting a hybrid form of the nozzle, and technically marrying three classification typologies: the Loeschcke VIII; the Bailey P group ii; the Bussière form D II 2.
