Originally printed in 1776, “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” was written in six volumes by Edward Gibbon. It has maintained its status as one of the most important literary achievements of the 18th-century and saw numerous editions. He was knighted in 1899 and appointed High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1908.
