Description
Newcomb College Pottery Jug by Harriet Joor 1906, 5 1/2" high, unglazed sections foot rim, See condition report
Condition
The spout, upper rim and upper handle join are in good condition.
One can feel a little glaze roughness in spots with fingertip at front of spout and on the rim.
Not damaged or chipped, just not perfectly smooth.
The neck section interior has got some fine crazing and a bit of blue glaze edging into the interior.
The exterior decoration is all in good shape with nice blue tonal variation in the berries and the encircling band has got the same blue variation.
The baluster section and the lower handle join have no apparent defects.
The interior of the baluster section is crazed and discoloured with spots of fritting.
As the swell tapers inwards towards the bottom rim one starts to see discolouration in the crazing and this staining continues into the base.
The foot rim has a few peculiarities such as an unglazed spot (5mm) on the exterior, a raw spot on the rim bottom itself (29mm) and 2 rough patches probably from stilts.
The base has discoloured crazing all over and a round central depression in the middle
(15mm).
The HJ encircled monogram is bright cobalt and highly visible, to the right AW14 but not as bold.
Most peculiar to us is the C monogram which has been ground down through the glaze to the pottery. It appears old and stained.
