Description

French, 19th century. Carved giltwood canape a oreilles or wing back sofa in the regence/Louis XIV rococo taste, having scrolled foliate decoration with shell crest, red and gold Scalamandre upholstery with cherubs set against florals, serpentine seat, and rising on cabriole legs with shell carved knees and whorl feet. Unmarked. Provenance: Having a purported history of being owned by a Duchess of Talleyrand. Approx. h. 47.5", w. 71.75", d. 25.5"; seat h. 18".

Condition

Scattered chips to finish; stable joint shrinkage; some wear to upholstery with stains and tears; evidence of previous worming (inactive); frame is structurally sound.
