She writes, “This quilt accompanied its maker, Elizabeth Shepard Parkin, from England to Prince Edward Island. She was born in 1811 in Durham, England...The medallion quilt is composed of over two thousand pieces arranged in sixteen successive borders around the central diamond. They represent a marvelous array of printed cottons available at that time to seamstresses in England...Little is known of Elizabeth’s life except that she was married to James Parkin and that the two immigrated to Prince Edward Island, where they settled and raised a family on Union Road in Queens County. Elizabeth died on July 24, 1888, at the age of seventy-seven...” Measures approximately 7’8” long, 7”6 wide (233.7 x 228.6 cm). The quilt stitching throughout is extensive showing an
average of 8 stitches per linear inch.
