Description
1770 Astruc Diseases of Women Medicine Gynecology Obstetrics Childbirth Baptism
“The most pretentious gynecologic work of the 18th-century, chiefly useful for its historical orientation.” (GM)
Jean Astruc was an 18th-century physician known for his medical treatises on venereal diseases and childbirth. Beginning in 1761, Astruc composed a work on the principles of female medicine. According to the Panckoucke Dictionary of Medicine,
“This treatise is remarkable for its great erudition, and is a very succinct description of the organs of women, and a fairly complete history of the art of childbirth, but that is its only merit. Moreover, it is full of false ideas, random assertions, and gratuitous hypotheses so that nothing is more obscure or more twisted than the theory of menstruation and the causes of childbirth. Astruc, anxious for the salvation of the innocents whom sin defiles before it begins, advises administering baptism by [vaginal] injection [before birth]!”
Astruc was mostly concerned with the health of the church, those entering into the church, and secrets of the church. He detested the Catholic Church for not allowing proper criticism, with which he had many concerns. His medical views corresponded to what was allowed through the Catholic Church, even though he fought for more.
