Description
Pleasing carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of a proud-looking African American man taken in the Charleston, South Carolina studio of photographer J.J. Mundy. A tax stamp affixed to the versos dates the image to between 1864-1866. The sitter appears to almost smile as he peers into the lens. Given the probable date this photo was made, it is a remarkable artifact of a time when African Americans could for the first time enter a photo studio in Charleston - the cradle of secession - as free people. Image is in excellent condition.
