Description
Large Culacula Battle/Dance Club, Tonga, 18th/19th C. Old dance/battle club of dense hardwood showing surface patina generations of use, good age and indigenous tool marks (probably coral reef and lava stones) from the maker. Paddle end is spade shaped with raised median strip running longitudinally to the intersection of the overall cruciform configuration. There is a small section with engraved tavatava pattern. There are very old chips on various edges. The bottom of the club's handle has a triangular lug with an irregularly shaped hole in the middle. This feature indicates that the club's origin may be Tongan or even Samoan rather than Fijian. With custom made stand.Provenance: Old Honolulu Collection; Stephen Meder; IMEPA Collection #6:A.01. Size: 43.5'' x 4.75'' x 1.25'' (110 x 12 x 3 cm).
