Description
A rare Worcester mug, circa 1755-56
Of attractive small size with a rounded and turned base, painted in blue with the 'Warbler' pattern (I.C.4), the bird perched on a mound, flowering branches issuing from rockwork to the reverse, the interior rim with a diaper and flowerhead border, 7.7cm high, workman's mark
Footnotes:
Provenance
Robyn Robb Collection
The underside of this mug is flat and unglazed, a rare feature on Worcester porcelain. Based on a silver shape, this form would have been difficult to support in the kiln, perhaps explaining the scarcity of these small mugs. An example from the John Alchin Collection was sold by Bonhams on 15 December 2020, lot 63 and is illustrated by Sandon and Spero, The Zorensky Collection (1996), p.418, no.555.
