Description
SIGNED RICHMOND, VIRGINIA CLASSICAL MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD, central bow-front form with an applied backsplash and stepped top set with a drawer to each end, case with a coarse of five upper drawers above four lower drawers separated by narrow bottle drawers retaining their original dividers, each side section flanked by tripartite columns, the whole raised on turned legs terminating in ball feet, each end set with a mixing slide above two fielded panels. Chalk inscribed on the reverse "J. Battley, March 1, 1815". Keys present. Mahogany, yellow pine, and white pine secondary woods. Retains an old surface with warm color. John Battley (1785-1858), Richmond, Virginia. Circa 1815. 58" HOA, 72 3/4" W, 22 1/2" D.

The present sideboard closely parallels an example by Johnathon Moss, a free-black cabinetmaker from Lynchburg, Virginia, in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. With accompanying appraisal from Naylor Antiques, Stevenson, Maryland, 1999.

Condition
Very good overall condition, some cracks and small patch repairs to facings and top, one end panel with patch, possible as made, brasses replaced in original drillings, and with areas of expected usage wear.
