17. RARE GERMAN BISQUE PORTRAIT LADY, 152, BY SIMON AND HALBIG. 19”. Marks: Simon & Halbig S & H 152 7 (head); Heinrich Handwerck (body). Bisque socket head with slender face and beautifully defined facial sculpting of cheek and chin lines, intaglio sculpted eyes with painted pale blue/grey irises, black pupils, incised eyeliner, thick brown upper eyeliner and delicately shaded shadow at inside corners of eyes, closed mouth with accented lips, unpierced ears, auburn mohair wig, adult lady composition body with shapely torso, slender ball-jointed limbs, wearing lovely antique aqua and lace fitted dress, undergarments including corset, aqua kid shoes.
Commentary: Exquisite and rare doll with finest bisque and sculpting, original body and body finish. Simon and Halbig, circa 1910, a model that is believed to be a portrait of Rosa Luxemburg, the Polish-born German intellectual and social reformer of the early 20th century.
