Description
"Boatman Delivering Goods on the South Fork Shenandoah River, Virginia", c1850s, oil on canvas, unsigned, depicting cattle at a fork in the river, single boatman hauling material downstream, mountain close, to the right. In period cove, ribbed, matched corner gold frame, OS: 28 1/2" x 31 1/2"; SS:16" x 24 1/4", cleaned, relined, retouched.OS: 28 1/2" x 31 1/2"; SS:16" x 24 1/4", cleaned, relined, retouched. Considered a second generation Hudson River School painter, Duncanson was the greatest African-American painter of the ante-bellum age and the first to attain international fame. From Seneca County, New York, he ended his days in Cincinnati, Ohio, having worked his dramatic landscapes in the Upper Penninsula (MI) and the American West. This painting will be included in the catalog of Duncanson's work being compiled by Michael F. Meyers.
