BIOGRAPHY:
A painter of moody, urban landscapes, Stephen Magsig was born in Toledo, Ohio and settled with his artist wife, Janet Hamrick, in Ferndale, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Although he began as an abstract painter, much of his mature work is highly realistic. This transformation occurred when he began photographing industrial buildings in Detroit in 1987, and became increasingly focused on their architectural details. However, he says of his paintings that he is not trying to recreate a photograph but is trying to paint mood. Many of his paintings are inspired by slide shots of Manhattan and Detroit, and he works on one painting at a time, sketching the initial drawing in indigo. He had his first solo show in New York in 1996. He cites Ed Fella, a professor at the California Institute of Arts, as a highly influential person who is responsible for Magsig's working on a painting every day.
