Description
1865 Thomas Paine Age of Reason DEISM Politics anti Bible Atheism Boston
“Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigues of supporting it.”
– Thomas Paine
Thomas Paines political activism in the late 18th-century was vitally important to many of the successes of the American Revolution. He was responsible for some of the most important propaganda pamphlets at the start of the war which inspired American rebels in 1776. One of Paines most influential works was The Age of Reason.
In this book, Paine defends the importance of deism within the confines of philosophy and politics. Paine attacked what he considered to be corruption within the Christian Church and wanted to disprove many of the teachings found in the Bible, particularly miraculous events. It has long been a cornerstone for atheistic and agonistic circles, so much so that Western governments have been known to prosecute printers of the book.
