Robert Barnes Signed and Inscribed Charcoal Sketch of the Liberty Bell
1p, measuring 11" x 14", n.p., dated 1960. A charcoal sketch, with red, green, and light brown pencil accents, of the Liberty Bell. Inscribed and signed at the lower margin, "For Jan Wahl on April fool's day. Robert Barnes 1960." The sketch has a light edge mat burn. Boldly signed, and very good.
Robert Barnes (b. 1934) attended both the School of the Art Institute and the University of Chicago, studying with the likes of Claes Oldenburg, Jack Beal, Irving Petlin, Leon Golub, Ellen Lanyon, Robert Indiana, and H.C. Westermann. In 1957 Barnes left Chicago to attend Columbia University in New York and became active in the world of Dada surrealist art and in the James Joyce Society. Barnes’s paintings and drawings have been showcased in gallery and museum exhibitions across the country for the last 40 years.
