Description
Thomas Lynch Jr. Clipped Sig, 2nd Youngest and Rarest Declaration Signer
Clipped signature taken from a larger letter or document, reading "Lynch thus". Mounted and housed in an attractive custom folder, with two images of Lynch. 2" x 0.5", n.p., n.d. The clipped signature has light toning, with some ink bleed through. Boldly signed.
Thomas Lynch Jr. (1749-1779) was the son of Thomas Lynch, a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress and the Continental Congress from 1774-1776. After his father stepped down due to illness, Lynch Jr. was selected to take his father's place. He was the second youngest signer of the United States Declaration of Independence as a representative of South Carolina, being only three months older than the youngest signer, Edward Rutledge. After a prolonged illness, Lynch Jr. and his wife set sail for the West Indies in December 1779. Sadly, the ship was lost at sea, making Lynch Jr. the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence to die.
