Sara Berman Beach was born in a small town near Lodz, Poland, in 1890 and died in New York City in 1978. She was a New York City artist whose career spanned a period of some 60 years and resulted in a formidable and diversified collection of artworks which include political murals, landscapes, still life, street scenes, posters and portraits. Though she worked primarily in oils, there is a large body of watercolors, pastels and charcoal drawings as well.As a child, Sara studied at the Polish Art Academy; she traveled in Belgium, Germany and England, before emigrating alone to the United States at the age of 16. In New York, she attended the Da Vinci Art School and became self-educated. She maintained an interest in history, poetry, philosophy and the classics, which she read fluently in five languages.Sara frequently exhibited her work in various City galleries and other venues. Paintings were donated to the Smithsonian Institution-National Museum of American History in Washington as well as the New York Public Library. She was previously listed in Who's Who in American Art. Living in the lower East Side of New York for much of her life, Sara characteristically immersed herself in its life, organizing and initiating street and park art exhibits. Among countless community involvements, Sara played a prominent role in organizing East Side artists, actors, writers, and dancers to support a local cultural center slated for demolition.Throughout her life, Sara was an active political and social participant A passionate concern for people, for combating intolerance and injustice, is reflected in much of her work, which represents a veritable social and political history of the United States over the course of her lifetime. Her still life and landscapes reflect a keen eye, a strong sense of composition, and a vibrant use of color.Sara was a vital and vibrant woman who continued to grow and question. During the last year of her life, at age 87, she wrote and illustrated a story. She continued to function as an artist, art teacher, and neighborhood champion.
