Description
The large hilt and mounts wrought entirely of silver, superbly embossed and engraved in motifs depicting Greek Orthodox referents within a Revolutionary context designed to convey a visual narrative to those who supported the Revolution: the double headed eagle, sign of the Byzantine Empire, the phoenix, representing the Resurrection of Christ, all amongst vases and festoons of flowers signifying victory, all framed in the rococo borders characteristic of Greek Neoclassicism. The well-wrought blade showing the Greek preference for a straight spine with upturned tip, with silver inscriptions and maker’s mark. First quarter of the 19th century. Wood restored. Overall length 80.8cm. Condition III
