Description

Basil Schoukhaeff, Russian, Soviet, 1887 to 1973, watercolor on paper pochoir print depicting a Russian Orthodox religious scene, 1924. Signed, inscribed, Paris, and dated lower right. Pochoir is the French word for stencil. In this technique separate stencils were cut, sometimes in thin sheets of copper, zinc, or aluminum, for every color component. Each successive color layer, using watercolor or gouache, was applied to the stencil with a brush called a pompon. Vasily Ivanovich Shukhaev or Basil Schoukhaeff is a Russian and Soviet painter, graphic artist, stage designer, and teacher. From 1920 to 1935 in exile.
