Bernard Buffet (July 10, 1928 - October 4, 1999) was a French Expressionist painter and member of the anti-abstract art group L'homme Temoin (Witness). Buffet was born in Paris, France, and studied art at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts), where he worked in the studio of the painter Eugene Narbonne. Among his classmates were Maurice Boitel and Louis Vuillermoz. supported by the dealer Maurice Garnier, Buffett produced religious works, landscapes, portraits and still life paintings. In 1946, he exhibited his first work, a self-portrait, at the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans in the Galerie Beaux-Arts. He held at least one major exhibition a year. In 1952, Buffet was the author of "Les Chants de Maldoror" by Comtede Lautreamont, and in 1955 he was awarded first prize by the magazine "Renaissance", which selected Ten best post-war artists. In 1958, at the age of 30, the first retrospective of his work was held at the Galerie Charpentier, Pierre Berge was a Buffett lover until Berge left Buffett for Yves Saint Laurent. Buffet, who created over 8,000 paintings and many prints, committed suicide at his home in Tourtour, southern France, on October 4, 1999. He was suffering from Parkinson's disease and could no longer work. Police said Buffett died about 4 p.m. after closing a plastic bag with duct tape around his head and neck.
