V-J Day "The Kiss" Photo Signed by George Mendonsa and Greta Friedman
Measuring 8" x 10". Considered the most famous "kiss" in history, the black and white photograph, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, shows a sailor kissing a woman in Times Square after news broke of the Japanese surrender in World War II. Signed and inscribed by the sailor in the photo, "Times Square VJ Day 8/14/45 USS the Sullivans 1942-1946 George Mendonsa QM 1/C" as well as the nurse Greta Friedman: "Best wishes, Greta." Fine condition with bold signatures.
This iconic photograph has lived a storied life since it was taken on August 15, 1945. Often called “The Kiss,” it became "THE" image of celebration at war’s end, a black-and-white bookend separating an era of darkness from the beginning of a time of peace. The photo was published in Life magazine, titled "V-J Day in Times Square", and captured the iconic moment of the American people in a moment of celebration and relief.
