Item Details
Description
Large Archive of photographic images documenting the Civil Rights protests in Nashville c. 1960-1964, taken by Harold Lowe.
1st item: Box containing 35 photographic black and white prints on Kodak paper, 8 x 10, signed by Lowe recto and stamped "Harold G. Lowe Jr. Photojournalism" en verso. (Note: about a half dozen of the photographs appear to be duplicates). In addition to the 35 photos are 3 photographic prints of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his visit to Nashville, none of which are stamped; 1 of the King prints is signed Harold Lowe lower right and another, which appears to be much older, has "Photo by Harold Lowe" written en verso (this photo has creases and a 2" taped tear at edge). Also included is a group of 18 various photographs, not signed or stamped, plus 12 copies of a single image of a man being arrested in front of Shyer's store in downtown Nashville and 1 signed photo of photographer Harold Lowe (some grime to margin). 69 items total. Includes images of John Lewis.
2nd item: 6 boxes of negatives and 2 binders with negatives and contact sheets. The binders contain contact sheets of more than 3,000 photographs taken during the Civil Rights protests in Nashville from 1960-1964. Mr. Lowe appears to have dated many of these sheets and also noted the locations where they were shot. Some of the events seen in the contact sheets include the 1960 "Sit in March at Night", 1961 march on the state capital; 1961 March on the War Memorial Building; Sit ins at the Arcade, dated 1962 and 1964; March on the State Capital 1962, 1964 sit ins at Metro Courthouse, 1962 march to the courthouse; 1962 B & W Cafeteria sit ins; 1964 scuffle at the Tic Toc Restaurant, and undated sit ins at the Kego Cafeteria, Hermitage Hotel and Old Hickory Lake. Contact sheets are in good condition. The condition of the negatives are not known. Notable historic figures pictured in the contact sheets include John Lewis, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Rev. Metz Rollins, Lester McKinney, black folk singer Len Chandler, and Mayor Beverly Briley of Nashville.
3rd item: Group of 6 framed photographs of the Nashville civil rights protests in frames, four are 20" x 16", two are in frames 11 " x 14".
4th item: 27 old photographic prints, most 8 x 10 (some smaller) of Civil Rights protests in Nashville, all with stamp: "Harold Lowe Staff Photographer Tennessean" en verso. (3 are copies of the same subject, a man being beaten, on the ground).
5th item: 5 old photographic prints of the Civil Rights protests identified as having been taken by photographers other than Harold Lowe.
6th item: Group of press passes and ephemera relating to Lowe, and photographs of many of these items being exhibited in a museum or gallery setting circa 2006, along with the book/catalog of the exhibit, We Shall Overcome, edited by Kathryn E. Delmez, which includes several photos taken by Lowe.

Important Note: The right to reproduce these images is not conveyed with any item in this lot.
