ANTIQUE RUSSIAN CLOISONNE SILVER LARGE SERVING SPOON
Russia, Imperial Period, St. Petersburg, ca. late 19th century. Beautiful gilt silver and enamel cloisonne serving spoon. It has a rounded finial tip with a blue enamel motif, and a twisted handle that tapers to the neck and round bowl. The backside is also adorned with cloisonne in blue, green, and shimmering red - and a slightly recessed square is set in the center.
HALLMARKS: On the neck are the assay marks 'JR' in Cyrillic for Rosen Jakov Michailowich (1898-1917), script with '1880' within a rectangle, and the silver purity and '84' with anchor and grapnel.
LARGE SIZE: 7.675 x 1.875 inches (19.5 x 4.8 cm). Weight: 63 grams.

HISTORY: Silverware was produced mainly in St Petersburg (which had more western European influence and therefore a more European style) and Moscow (where a more pure Old Russian-inspired style came from), but other cities like Kiev, Odessa, and even places as far afield as Archangelsk had silversmiths creating beautiful objects of art. The industry grew quickly, aided by art exhibitions held from the mid-1850s onward and the public excitedly snapped up the beautiful objects they produced. An exhibition in London in 1851 showcasing silver made in Moscow introduced the Old Russian style to western Europe and the renown of Russian silversmiths increased, with firms like Ovchinnikov, Kurlyukov, the Grachev Brothers, and Faberge attaining national and international renown.
