Description
Rare Native American deer skin over buffalo hide painted shield, with primitive hand painted thunderbird center, geometric pattern on base - original red, yellow & black paint - Probably Plains Indians, mid-19th century or earlier. 21.5"D. Provenance: Found in the home of a Yorktown military collector - as near as we can determine from family members, this is the first time this has appeared at auction as has been in a private collection for over 20 years - This museum quality piece is being sold without reserve.
NOTE- SORRY, BUT DUE TO FEDERAL REGULATIONS, the attached feathers and talon that appear in the photos, cannot be sold with the shield and CANNOT be given to the purchaser - They are in the process of being turned over to the Fish & Wildlife Service.
Condition
Minor paint losses - some deteoration of hide at top center & top right center near perimeter - some deer skin hide losses where attaches to buffalo hide frame on reverse - see photos for more information or email if require additional photos.
