Mayuka Yamamoto is a renowned Japanese artist who was born in Okayama City, Japan in 1964. She received her MFA from Musashino Art University in 1990, and then participated in the Japanese government's Artist Study Abroad Program to continue her studies in London. The artist now lives and works in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Some of Mayuka Yamamoto's most iconic works are boys in animal costumes, and when Mayuka Yamamoto's first child was born in 2002, she was reminded of her childhood and began to depict fear and hurt for unknown reasons in her work. Mayuka Yamamoto's work explores the most primal sources of fear, natural instincts, parenting and the idea of childhood. Her works combine portraits of children with the characteristics of different animals, which, while figurative and realistic, also produce a subtle effect of detachment and absurdity.
