Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) was an American photographer known for her black-and-white photographs, mostly self-portraits, that explored themes of femininity, identity, and the body. She was born in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in a family of artists.
Woodman began taking photographs at a young age and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she developed her distinctive style. Her photographs often featured blurred or ghostly images of herself, captured using long exposures and slow shutter speeds. She frequently posed in abandoned buildings and used mirrors and other objects to create surreal and dreamlike compositions.
Despite her short career, Woodman's work has had a lasting impact on contemporary photography. Her photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and she has been the subject of numerous retrospectives and monographs. Her tragic death by suicide at the age of 22 has also contributed to the enduring fascination with her life and work.
