Description
Maurice Lincoln Bower American Massachusetts Impressionist oil Painting signed. Oil on Board; SLR; ML Bower for Maurice Lincoln Bower; image of young boy looking toward heavens with ray of light coming down; 16 x 18", 20 x 22" framed.
Maurice Lincoln Bower was born in Ohio in 1889 , and showed an ability to draw at an early age. His family moved to Philadelphia where Bower attended High School and spent a year at Penn State. Upon learning of classes being taught by Howard Pyle alumnus Walter Everett, he switched to the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia. While still a student he began to be published in St. Nicholas magazine. This was followed by four years working for the Hearst Syndicate. Later he became a medical illustrator in the U.S. Army during WWI. Bower had always wanted to live and work in Paris, and when offered the opportunity by the McCall Corporation in 1926, he accepted at once. For the next five years he spent his summers in Paris and the remainder of the year in Philadelphia. The stock market crash of 1929 ended this arrangement. He continued to work for most of the major magazines, and painted at least a dozen Saturday Evening Post covers in the 1930's. As photography began to outpace the demand for illustrators, it became difficult for Bower to find continuous work, and he turned to the less lucrative world of portrait painting and illustrations for minor publications. In 2009 in honor of the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby, the Post saluted the equine art of Maurice L. Bower.
