Description
A Fine Coastal Asmat shield. Asmat people, Central and Coastal region, West papua (Formerly Irian Jaya). The shield of classical elongated rectangular form, with deeply carved designs in red against a white ground. The handle long and running as a midrib down the reverse, the top with a small structure pointing upwards as is characteristic. A fine old example.The designs on the shield, representing the bipane nose ornament and Ainor symbol are both references to headhunting. Shields of this type were used in warfare and in public displays. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. The Shield measures 66 inches tall x 17.5 inches wide.
