[CIVIL WAR]. 11-star First National Confederate flag. Ca 1861 or after.Â
20 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. (sight) printed cotton flag. Blue canton includes large central star surrounded by 10 smaller stars. Three small holes at hoist end (toning and soiling throughout, wear and some fraying to edges). Housed in 24 x 17 in. frame with later inked notations on reverse side of frame attesting to the flag's provenance.Â
Provenance: Estate of the Late Mary Ann Dickie, the Americana Gallery, Evanston, IL; Hanzel Galleries, 1120 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL, Lot 610, 10 March 1975 sale (modern notations on frame backing). Additional inked notation on frame backing mentions the name, "J.W. Rainwater, 1975." The flag dates ca 1861 or after, and is likely northern made, but date of manufacture cannot be confirmed.Â
