DESCRIPTION: An Idle Moment, 1885. Oil on canvas. John White Alexander was an American portrait, figure, and decorative painter and illustrator. He moved to NYC at 18 and worked at Harper's Weekly where he was an illustrator and political cartoonist. After 3 years of apprenticeship he traveled to Munich for formal training. In 1881, he returned to NYC and achieved success in portriature. Some of his sitters were, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Burroughs, Henry G. Marquand, and more. His works are featured in the MET, Brooklyn Art Museum, LACMA, Butler Institute, and Library of Congress. PROVENANCE: Macbeth Galleries, NYC; Gabriel & Jane Auerbach, Florida; Brunk Auctions; Larry Johnson, Maryland; Christies. LITERATURE: Mary Anne Goley John White Alexander: An American Artist in the Guilded Age, 2018. Subsequently recorded by Goley for her CR underway for Alexander. MEASUREMENT: 26" high x 34" wide; frame: 14-3/4" wide. CONDITION: Painting has been conserved including having been lined, however not showing evidence of substantial inpainting. MEG
