Description
Early sixth-plate tinted tintype of a young mother breastfeeding her infant. Obviously taken at home, with the colored wallpaper. A very intimate image, as the mother has opened her gown. The baby's gown is tinted an orange-yellow and the cloth that would have been intended to catch the drips of milk or to wipe the baby's mouth is tinted pink. "Gurney 1861" is written in pencil inside the case. Jeremiah Gurney was in business with his son Benjamin Gurney from 1858 on. We cannot positively attribute the tintype to Gurney, but think the inscription, hidden inside the image, may have been added by a family member, who also knew when the image was made.
