Description
Rare 19th Century Japanese Striking Stick Clock
Circa 1850. Hardwood case with lacquered and silvered scale of 13 movable characters, pierced frontplate and verge-and-balance-wheel escapement. Catalog Note: known as Shaku Dokei, the clocks' name derives from its size, the word shaku is a Japanese unit of measurement approximately one foot in length. Up until 1873 the Japanese used a system of unequal hours or seasonal hours (12 hours between dawn and dusk), the hours are engraved onto sliding plates so they can be adjusted according to the season and at the back of each plate is a pin which sets off the striking mechanism on the clock weight in accordance with the unequal hour system.
